Aren't Hugo S?pez and I technically the only ones to maintain their communist governments to the present day and are still, you know, alive? (No, wait, so is Kilga's namesake. Unfortunately. Though, can we really say that Kim Jong Il is a communist? A really lapsed one, if nothing else.)

It just occurred to me that we don't have a Hu Jintao. That seems like a pretty big omission.

God, I wish I still had my books on Nicaragua and Sandino. Then I could throw out all kinds of crazy stuff about him. As it stands, the only thing I remember is that he wasn't all THAT left-wing; the Kuomintang marched into Beijing carrying his portrait, yeah, but later he ended up taking a rather different approach from the rest of international communism. (I don't actually remember if the Comintern denounced him, or if my memory is just blending facts again.)

As for Pol Pot, we're fine without one. Really. :S

Sandino, to me, was just a bad motherfucker who took on the US Marines, leading them into a disastrous guerrilla campaign in the jungle. He was the original, the source, the dude who inspired so many after him, and not just in Latin America. I think his main MO was more "get the US out of here" than "get the US out of here and then institute a glorious socialist revolution".
