>Tease/test her by recommending using some skill of ours to incapacitate the doll that would be plausible to someone that doesn't know us, but doesn't actually exist; see if she rolls with it.
> You ask Marisa to restrain the doll with a spell, just in case she decides to wake up.
> "Uh, wouldn't that be a bad idea? Spells are breakable, after all. I say we just get her some rope and tie her up, she's not very strong," Marisa suggests with a slight grimace on her face.

> "That sounds like an awful lot of work..." Marisa objects, but you raise a finger and say it's important to investigate a crime scene like this. For all we know, poor Medicine might have been framed! "...You honestly put too much thought into that gray matter of yours, Alice," Marisa says flatly.

>ARE any windows open, right now?
> Just the ones here in the living room. Three, if this parser is to be believed.

>Send a doll up to get the wire. ... and station another at the door to the house.
> It's clear that Marisa here isn't being truthful, but despite her statements you haven't quite cornered her just yet. You decide to keep an eye on the witch while sending up one of your dolls to fetch the wire. You also silently cast a spell to put one of the Sentry Dolls outside to keep an eye on the front door.

>Do we know any decent chemists or whatever else might be able to pick out trace amounts of that gas from here, potentially?
> To your knowledge, only Eirin comes to mind. But you probably won't need your help, you've hung around with Marisa long enough to figure out how to ascertain toxins in the air. You just need to get the TOXIN INDICATION KIT from her room.

>Provide her estate with a boot to the head.
> You channel your inner Captain Falcon as you take flight. Once at a suitable altitude, you descend on Marisa and bequeath her noggin with the aforementioned boot, knocking her cleanly off her broom. Mari swears in pain and agony, but she's a big girl, she can take it. You recover from the recoil and dive on Marisa again, this time to tackle her into the ground, a good ways from your house.

> "W...What the hell, ze?!" Marisa stutters as you pin her. "It's me, dammit! Your roommate?!"
> You say that you may sound like Marisa, but you act nothing like her. You demand an explanation...Politely, of course.
> "I don't need to tell you anything!"
> That's not an explanation, you reply. You decide to refer to "Mari" by her real name... Medicine.
> "Wha...? How did you--"
> You say it's pretty obvious, given the inactive doll's body and the toxin you smelled earlier.
> "Oh...Crap." Realizing she's caught in a corner, Mari-Medi stops struggling and sighs. "I needed Marisa for something...I needed her body."
> You ask why. Medicine refuses to answer immediately.
> "I...I just...Want you to know that..." Medi's frown suddenly curls into a wicked smile. "That I have a very good sleight of hand!"
> Before you can ask her what the hell she means, you hear the flick of a spell card...Suddenly, you're blasted off of Medicine by an explosion of stars and lasers. You jump to your feet just as you hear a familiar charging sound right afterwards...You try to dive behind a tree to avoid the incoming Master Spark, but it's not quite quick enough--you're scorched by the blast and sent careening off of the forest path, behind some bushes. You lay there, twitching in searing agony, as you hear Medicine mutter "Good riddance," before the forest grows silent.

> You can't recall being in this kind of pain before. Sure, being humiliated by Marisa in combat is one thing, but this is something different...Flat-out betrayal. Medicine didn't seem like the most endearing type, but she was willing to help you...You wonder, was she ever sincere to you? Was she really just willing to help, or was this her plan all along...?

> You and Marisa didn't always get along, but you still cared about her and vice-versa...You knew she was jealous of your skill and you were jealous of Mari's charming social graces...And yet...You both completed each other in a way that brought you closer together...Yin and yang...Plus and Minus...Roger and Ebert...

> Your bond has been violated.
> The one person you truly care about in this world is in danger, as is your promise to Mima.
> Thoughts about what happened to poor Marisa fill you with anguish and anger.
> This isn't the same kind of rage you felt as a child...This is personal.
> You clench your teeth and grip the ground, expecting to grab dirt but instead capturing a rock. You crush it with your bare hands. If it comes to that, you'll do the same to Medicine...How DARE she betray you like this! All you and Marisa wanted to do was to spend some time together...
> You gasp. If you hadn't gone through the trouble to get Medicine while the game downloaded, this might not have happened...Your heart aches. For a second, your resolve wavers...
> No, you tell yourself. This isn't your fault. You'd never do this to Marisa personally.
> With that in mind, you growl (almost in an inhuman fashion) and try to get back on your feet. Your skin screams in pain, still charred from that laser earlier, but you don't care. Marisa needs your help.
> If guardian angels exist, you wonder...Why not a guardian demon...?

> With some effort and coaxing from your mind to not give into the pain, you slowly but surely get to your knees, then to your feet...Your legs feel like Play-Doh, with the very real possibility of keeling over...But you take that first step anyways.
> *SNAP*
> Was that a twig? it must have been, but...Suddenly, all has gone silent yet again. You can hear someone breathing...You turn your head to try and find the source of the noise, but see nothing. You ask if anyone's out there in a weak voice.
> "Uh...Yes?" a voice nervously responds. It's male, but it doesn't sound at all like Rinnosuke's voice. Said voice also sounds distinctly European in nature. "Are you human or are you beast?"
> You groan in reply, saying you're not entirely sure. You try and turn towards the voice, but your leg gives out as you step and you take a tumble through the brush, landing back on the forest path. You wince as you look up to see the owner of the voice...A young man in midnight-blue robes, but you can't make out the exact details; your eyes are all watery and your vision has blurred as a result.
> "My gods, what happened to you?" the man asks.
> You weakly reply with the words "Massive" and "Laser."
> "Hmm...Unfortunate, that. At least you're still alive." He pauses for a second, before speaking in a somewhat careful and deliberate tone. "Do you...Need a lift, or something of the sort?"

> Who's a good red mushroom youkai? You are!

>Mushroom-headed girl? We don't know any mushroom-head girls, do we?
> Not personally. You do recall Marisa talking about someone fitting that description from a previous incident, however...Could this have been the same one? You make a mental note to ask Mari about it later.

>Are we closer to Eintei or home at this point? Visiting Eirin ourselves... might help in theory, but if she's in on Medicine's scheme then that's walking straight into a trap. Maybe we should get backup...
> Your house is definitely closer. If this man's poisoned familiar is beyond your help, you can consult Eirin afterwards.

>How difficult would it be to give directions to Eintei, or would we have to show these strangers there ourselves? Well, if Medi-Marisa is in better shape than us, she may make a better escort...
> You could give directions, but at this time of night, it's probably safer to have an escort, especially considering one of you may have to carry this Zakuro fellow to Eientei anyhow. As for Medi-Marisa's condition, you don't know if she's conscious or not.

>Do we have any extra fighting gear we left back home in our rush to pursue?
> Plenty. Mari has some magic wands in the chest in her room, you have an assortment of daggers, short swords, spears...And of course a massive supply of dolls and puppet wire. You also carry a deck of spell cards on you at all times.

>Unless we're way closer to Eintei than home, the best response is probably, "Hm... help me back to my place and I'll let you know how to get to the best doctor in Gensokyo."
> The man nods. "Consider it done...Oh, where are my manners! My name's Monarda Knowledge, and you're..." You introduce yourself. "Alice? That's a lovely name, I thought it sounded familiar too..." He then proceeds to tell you how he met Marisa...Sort of. He was kind of out of it for most of that event. In any case, his sister Patchy filled him in on you and Marisa, which avoids most of the exposition but also irritates you to no end. Yes, it's true you helped Marisa on the occasional raid, but you're far from a thief! You're merely an accomplice! Geeze, when will she ever get it right?!

> "Uh, you're looking a bit flustered, there..." Monarda notices you talking to yourself. You say it's nothing and he doesn't push the subject further.

> You successfully guide Monarda-san back to yours and Marisa's cottage, and ask him to leave you on the couch.
> "Uh, all right then," Monarda complies, not fully aware of your intentions. That coming to mind, you ask him where his friend Zakuro is. "He's in a clearing not too far from here. I cast a protective shield around our makeshift campsite so he'd be safe...I hope I'm not too late. I'll be back soon!" And with that, he glides out the door.
> You summon a bunch of dolls to take Medicine's body up to Marisa's room. While she's unconscious, you can still feel Marisa's "essence" within the doll's form. The thought of Medicine swapping bodies with Marisa fascinates and terrifies you, but your thought is pushed aside by the sudden realization that you still need to be healed. Thankfully, this part is left to little detail; you are shuffled off to he downstairs bathroom so you can disrobe and heal yourself with the help of some Nurse Dolls. With a fresh change of skin and clothes, you emerge, still feeling a bit sore but otherwise ok.

> And what good timing you have, there's a knock at the door. You answer it and see Monarda carrying an orange-haired swordsman on his shoulder. This must be the one called Zakuro. A look at his face shows a rather pale, sickly green complexion, almost like that of a (non-asian) zombie. You beckon Monarda to take his comrade to the couch, and ponder just how you're going to cure this poor man.

>Is there a reason we didn't get the toxin ID kit from Marisa's room while we were up there?
> It totally had to do with the Parser making sure he was actually letting his players participate instead of just watching text-based cutscenes.
> It was because the dolls were moving Medi-Mari (or was it Mari-Medi?) upstairs while you were busy healing. Now that you've thought about it, you decide to save Eirin a bit of trouble and try to identify the poison yourself. You ask Monarda-san to wait a bit longer and rush upstairs to get the ID Kit, but are interrupted by Hourai coming up to you and miming "Hey. That package you got earlier today? It's movin'. You might wanna do something about that." Indeed, the package you got from Nitori is shaking every now and then, like an egg that's about to hatch from its egg. You say you'll deal with it later though, right now there's a poisoned shikigami on your couch that needs your help. You ask them to watch over the package in the meantime, as you head back downstairs.

>While we're working on that, ask about what happened. "Can you tell me anything else about that mushroom girl? I'm not familiar with any, I'm afraid, but it might help..."
>And in case the zombie thought is relevant... "Did he get hit by anything else lately?"
> "No, she was the only encounter we had that night...Aside from the typical flying pests around these parts. She was the only one that gave us trouble." Monarda thinks for a moment as you prepare to run the toxin screening. "If I recall correctly, that girl also had a package on her back...Some kind of log, I believe? Perhaps she was transporting firewood?"

> Hmmm...You vaguely remember someone of that description, but you need to ask Monarda for more details about her appearance and personality. Meanwhile, the Toxin ID Kit does its thing, you drew a sample of Zakuro's blood and it's analyzing it now.

>Wait on that. Go ahead and ask Monarda for details - who's this log girl?
> In the meantime, you ask Monarda about the girl, mainly about her apperance. Monarda describes his assailant as a young girl--a few years younger than Marisa, perhaps--dressed in purple and black garb. She had brown hair done up in braids and green eyes, a pale complexion, and her headgear resembles that of a large purple button mushroom with a white skull imprint on it. If you recall, that's similar to the poisonous mushroom patch Marisa discovered some time ago.

> You'd be correct. Having worked with mushrooms in both magic and culinary instances, you know the signs, but also how to cure most of them. It's usually a home remedy of some kind, like dipping your toes into vinegar water to treat toenail fungus. Hopefully it won't be too serious...But just to make sure, you ask Monarda when you were attacked.
> "Uh, I'm not sure exactly, but it was at least an hour ago, perhaps more..." he says, rubbing his arm in anxiety.

>Did Marisa mention any properties about those mushrooms that might help us out?
> You recall that the Amantia Cranium also has some medical properties as well. If the mushroom is chopped and ground into a fine powder before being boiled in salt water, the resulting mixture can be used to cure certain ailments instead. Unfortunately, this medicine takes hours to prepare, and that's time you don't exactly have on your hands right now.

>Would it be worth bringing over any nurse dolls to help?
> Not really. They only know as much as you know, and their main purpose is to patch up wounds, treat burns, and remove unsavory things like gangrene and boils from the skin. If you assumed control over the dolls yourself (and had the proper training), you could do more complex stuff like surgery, but that's best reserved for people like Eirin and Rin Satsuki.

>Has the toxin kit had any luck yet?
> For the record, the kit itself is a tiny magi-computer inside a case, with various things like needles and Q-tips to gather samples. You place the toxic material on the magicomputer's spell circle, and it reacts by breaking down the toxin's substances and listing them in detail before coming back with a result. On that note, upon looking at the small readout on the top of the computer...

Code: [Select]
> ANALYSIS COMPLETE.
> TOXIN ORIGINATES FROM A SPECIES OF POISONOUS LEECH (Hirudo Tynatoxico), WHOSE BLOOD COMPOUNDS
ARE USED TO MAKE "WHOOPING GAS" GRENADES. SAID GAS CAUSES SEVERE FLU-LIKE SYMPTOMS IN THE PATIENT, SOMETIMES LEADING TO PNEUMONIA IF NOT TREATED IMMEDIATELY.

> "Yes, yes that's exactly what happened!" Monarda says, upon reading the results of the test. "Zakuro was coughing up storm, poor man could hardly breathe..."
> A loud cough from the nearby sofa alerts you to Zakuro's presence. He tries to sit up as best he can, looks at Monarda and says "Gee, th-thanks for the concern..." and with another cough he flops back down on the sofa and groans.
> Monarda sighs. "Well, at least we know what's ailing him...What do you suggest we do?"

>It doesn't even... well, I guess it's an ID kit, not a treatment suggestions kit. Do we have an easy way to look up more about that leech? Or those grenades, assuming the effect or active agent is similar? Maybe we can help some before bringing in Eirin.
>How safe would these two be getting to Eintei on their own, assuming Medicine isn't causing more trouble than usual on the way? Or us in our pursuit, of course.
>... is leech also a mushroom thing or does this mean the mushroom girl is using, like, blood-sucking leech blood somehow? Weird.
>"It does say treat immediately... pneumonia... let's at least get him a glass of water." Might as well get one of the dolls on that.
>Just how much freaking out is the box doing?
There was something here once. Wonder what...

> You could search Marisa's room, she's bound to have a book about this sort of thing hidden in her stash. You don't know how long that'll take, however, and time is of the essence.

>How safe would these two be getting to Eintei on their own, assuming Medicine isn't causing more trouble than usual on the way? Or us in our pursuit, of course.
> It's dangerous to go alone at night! Especially when you're carrying a crippled familiar with you! Monarda seems to be a skilled enough mage, but one of you will have to run interference while the other carries Zakuro. You're unsure of Medicine's MO at this point, or unaware if the mushroom girl is going to stage another attack on Monarda.

>... is leech also a mushroom thing or does this mean the mushroom girl is using, like, blood-sucking leech blood somehow? Weird.
> On that note, you're not entirely sure. It is a poison, yes, but why a mushroom-themed youkai would be bothering with aquatic parasites is a mystery you can't answer at this time.

>"It does say treat immediately... pneumonia... let's at least get him a glass of water." Might as well get one of the dolls on that.
>Just how much freaking out is the box doing?
> You ask Shanghai to get Zakuro a glass of water, while you address the box. You turn to the front door and see that the box...Is not there. You turn to Hourai, who gestures at your feet. The box is there, attempting to nuzzle you like a lovesick puppy that's gone blind.
> Monarda raises an eyebrow at said package, but doesn't say anything.
