One week a long time ago, Matt Maiellaro and Dave Willis, the creators of Aqua Teen Hunger Force and who are secretly immortal, spent some time in Japan.
There, at a bar, they met a man named Ota-san.
Although, Ota was actually still in middle school - he just looked old enough to drink because he'd been for two years now.
They became fast friends and spent the week together.
Eventually, it came time for Ota-kun's friends to leave for home.
Ota-kun never saw them again.
Inspired by the alcohol and the minds of his new friends, Ota-kun decided to make something that would convey his appreciation to his foreign friends.
He took on the name ZUN, because one of his new friends had been fond of calling out "ZOOOOOM~!" while drunk, which to young Ota-kun's ears were 「ズーーーーーーン」 ("ZUUUUUUUN").
Calling upon ancient forces near and far, and wishing upon a celestial star, and after getting some advice from his classmate who happened to be in the KKK, the Knight's Templar, the Illuminati, and the Free Masons all at once, Ota-kun created a peice of Japanese history all his own, but sealed it with a large magical barrier.
After graduating from high school, ZUN decided to put his plan into action, and used the sealed section of Japan known as Gensokyo along with his skill in programming and music to make a series of computer games.
He wanted these games to take off amongst the people, and become very popular, until word of them spread far across the globe and had reached those friends that young Ota-kun had made in that bar that fateful week.
Ota, now old enough to be Ota-san, drinks each day to keep these wistful feelings alive and remind himself of the fun he had that week, all those years ago.
Popular indeed as Touhou is on the internet, ZUN has yet to reunite with his long-lost friends.
He has never heard of Aqua Teen Hunger Force.
And Matt Maiellaro and Dave WIllis have never heard of Touhou.
It is a truly sad tale.
