I personally find the first one to be absurdly hard. :V
Second to that would be Undefined Fantastic Object, maybe Subterranean Animism.
Third is Perfect Cherry Blossom, just because of stage four. The music is beautiful. But it's so long and difficult.

Discuss, I would love to hear everyone's opinions!~

Some say UFO's among the hardest/the most hardest... but I find SA harder, I don't know why. Must be the bullet patters, or how the options work.

I haven't played any of the PC-98 games, but I think HRtP was the hardest out of that era.

Now from the windows era, UFO hands down. SA is a close second. From a personal stand point....PCB. I am in no way saying it is the hardest. I'm just really bad at it. Don't know why.

Among the shooting games, UFO is the hardest, no question. Can't speak for any of the others.

SA (for while I know only the normal level from the most of windows games), but I heard that when you go to hard/lunatic, UFO becomes the hardest game from Windows series.

You've gotta specify the difficulty! (And also whether you include the pc-98 games, photo games, etc.etc.)

Talking only about Lunatic and the Windows series, I would definitely go with UFO. My hands are in the air, nothing more to say, it's the hardest game.

If you include PC-98 I'd probably say PoDD since I hear a lot about it being damn hard, and from watching streams and videos of it I can sorta see why. I've never played it myself though so my opinion on it is worth very little.

On other difficulties things vary quite a bit.

On Normal it's generally seen that SA is the hardest, but I'd strongly contest that since it's not too bad on normal!
During my first 1ccs on normal I found UFO and IN a lot harder than SA. EoSD was also harder for me than SA, but to a lesser extent.

These things are quite subjective, so take everything said with a pinch of salt, including what I said!

Easy:

Normal: Subterranean Animism (EoSD not too far behind.)
Hard: Undefined Fantastic Object (Took a lot more credits out of me to clear on Hard mode even though it was the last one remaining.)
Lunatic: Undefined Fantastic Object (From what I seen and experienced, UFO looks harder than SA even though I haven't 1CC either yet.)
Extra: Subterranean Animism's Koishi Komeiji.

Based on my personal experience of the Touhou Windows games.

Yeah, pretty much.

And really guys, HRtP is a complete cakewalk. If you think it's hard then you don't understand the mechanics or haven't put the effort into it.

This thread has got some good answers for hardest game.

UFO/PoDD for survival, PCB/IN Youmu for scoring, to put it simple.

Currently, I can only speak about normal for the window Touhou games (I'm now working on hard), but with that in mind, SA. SA without a doubt, not a single question (ORIIIIN). I still remember the exhilaration of finally clearing it.

Yes. And pressing C is also hard. Therefore TD is the hardest game in the series ever.

But anyway, yes, it depends on the difficulty, but UFO and PoDD should be pretty difficult compared to the others on any difficulty (except the Nue battle, which is easy for an Extra boss).

As for anyone who doubts HRtP, I suggest you watch this. Bomb the stages for lives, suicide for bombs, attack the bosses by sliding repeatedly without concern for dying. Most trivial Lunatic mode in the series, if you're going for an anything-goes clear. Even PoFV Lunatic with Aya/Medicine involves more dodging than that.

It's actually a rather simple clear on difficulties above Normal (well, I didn't play Hard so I don't know about that), since you get to freeze so many bullets that you gain quite a few lives. Also, since the patterns are certainly on impossible-to-gain-consistency-on levels, you're not supposed to dodge them but cancel the bullets with your freezes. A bit of practice and you'll get it down rather well.

It can be an intimidating game but once you get it down it really isn't THAT hard, or hard enough to not 1cc it even on Lunatic in my case. Here's one of my lunatic runs, messy, but clearable! As for extra, well, I got pretty good! But I made two silly mistakes and died on Test Slave when it's really easy and derped at the very end. Could've been one death total but meh.

PC-98 games it is either 1 or 3. PoDD destroyed me the first time I played it when I have experience with PoFV (means nothing for PoDD!). For the windows games I'd say it has to be UFO because... well, *looks at signature* it surely isn't SA for me.

It'd be between HRtP and SA for me.
HRtP is very luck-based when it comes to difficulty. If you get lucky, it can be very easy, if not it can be very hard.
SA is... impossible to beat for me. Even on easy.

I like how some people say the Phantasmagoria games are easy because they can get farther in the game. The whole game is basically going for a walk at stages 1-6 then crying because the AI cheats too much on stages 7-9 (Chiyuri why :ohdear:)

For Lunatic, probably

PoDD > UFO > PoFV (not Aya/Medicine) > SA > EoSD > IN > MoF > PCB > SoEW > MS > LLS > PoFV (Aya/Medicine)

Not sure where I would put in FW since I've hardly played it. For normal mode:

FW > UFO > PoFV (not-Aya/Medicine) > PoDD > SA > MS > EoSD > SoEW > PCB > IN > MoF > LLS > PoFV (Aya/Medicine)

PoFV and PoDD could maybe go above UFO, but sometimes you get lucky with the bosses dying fast. MS and SoEW don't get that much harder as you go up the difficulties, which is why they place much higher on Normal than Lunatic. FW might be a bit high, but I wasn't able to clear Normal until I already had Lunatic clears behind me, so I think it deserves the spot.

Stuff like HRtP, StB/DS are their own thing. HRtP plays completely differently from the shooters, and the photo games are essentially spell card practice and putting in time until you get through them. There's not really any punishment for mistakes in them.

After trying PoDD a bit, and seeing a few videos of it, I'm pretty sure it's the hardest one (there might be a biais here, because no focus system, input lag and overall eye cancer kinda made me throw this game away).
With UFO being a close second.
